ARTIST STATEMENT

Aliza Stone Howard’s oil paintings chart identity and self-construction through zeitgeisty, conventionally feminine cultural touchstones, particularly film stills, recasting seemingly transient subject matter with emotional charge and relatability. Rendered with a clarity that emphasizes the vivid accessibility of memory and nostalgia, Howard’s work presents feminine performance as both a collective and deeply personal practice. Her engagement with pop imagery is distinguished by its confessional intimacy; rather than ironizing cultural obsession, she approaches her source material with reverence, revealing its enduring psychological and emotional imprint. Howard lives and works in New York City.
